a Very LONG Court case NOT concerning diamonds, well why would such a case take so much time in court? Well dear Dr. Watson its because the Botswana Gov. and De Beers really think that the bushman are endangering the environment with over hunting.... What do you mean.... all 2000 of them with their slaughterhouses and Savage hunting methods (oh no thats modern society) WOW they must be really good hunters old Sherlock

Yes Dr. Watson these Savages need to be civilised and taken forcibly from their homes, we just cant have anyone living peacefully and naturally as they do. Oh and remember that their land is not the richest source of diamonds in the WORLD......

(because if the land was rich surely its people will be rich too?! the botwana life expectancy is 35 and there HIV and AIDS are running rampant amongst other illnesses- Botswana was rated as one of the more ethical countries but the people who hold the ancestry there are being persecuted, do they deserve to have choices- at least!!!)
IT IS ELEMENTARY dear watson elementary

The combination of De Beers (who are making lots of money out of Botswana) and the Botswana Government (whom are mainly funded by the diamond mining industry) are not properly compensating the native peoples for loss of health, way of life and culture, their joint company Debswana is making far more money from the San Bush peoples land then they are giving back to the bush people. They have taken their land from them. Its not money the Bush people want but at least this fact demonstrates that the Government are not playing fairly. The Bushmen’s culture has been crumbling because there way of life is being suppressed. The Bushmen are ancient peoples living peaceful ways of life in tune with nature: people we could do with more off not less. They are ecological because they are part of the ecology

Please support the HUMANITARIAN PROGRESS INITIATIVE and TELEPHONE some people who need to make way for TRUE PROGRESS in humanity-
DE BEERS and BOTSWANA GOVERNMENT.
don’t be rude or aggressive
we just want to make a ‘real’ vocalisation of rights of people to live their lives peacefully in their natural settings
PLEASE MAKE A PHONE CALL- Best before 13TH DECEMBER

THERE IS A FEW DAYS LEFT BEFORE A COURT DECISION INFLUENCING THE RIGHTS OF ANCIENT PEOPLES TO CHOICE AND ABILITY TO PASS ON THEIR WAYS AND MESSAGES FOR GENERATIONS TO COME...

*Call them and state your personal place of support to the Bushmen…
*You can say your name and/ or ask them to contact you,
*Get them to at least register your concern,
*You can ask De Beers if they feel it’s alright to make lots of money mining diamonds from a piece of land that belongs to tribal peoples and not offering a fair share.
*Or simply call any or all of the telephone numbers and say ‘the san bush people want to go home’ * feel free to talk with them as much as you like (or that they will allow)
however please remember we do not endorse aggression, negativity or anything like this.

Through the power of false ownership, the native tribal people are being forced to bow down to wishes that their government have imposed on them.

Without full and proper regard for their lives the government is in fact illegally moving them and restricting them from their land. They are being threatened and persecuted. They have been interlocked in a HIGH COURT case for the longest time in Botswana history to decide whether the enforced actions are in fact illegal- the financially ‘poorest’ have had to pay for a court case with one of the richest groups of the country- the Government (backed by De Beers).
The decision will be made on 13TH DECEMBER by 3 judges who may or may not be ENDORSED by DIAMOND MINING COMPANIES!
In these last crucial few days we need to amplify the message:‘THE SAN BUSH PEOPLE WANT TO GO HOME’ and it is their humanitarian right too.

PLEASE HELP us to show great support for these deserving people in the last few days before the decision… We want to use the tool of telephone as it is more personal and harder to ignore than email…

Speak out, Say what the Bushmen want us to say (they want to go home)

Botswana has been rated one of the less corrupt Governed states in Africa. It is however difficult to believe the idea that the bush people are being treated in a non-corrupt way as the Government suggests.
Or that De Beers is having no effect on the Bushmen because they are only occupying a tiny part of the reserve that the Bushmen are being thrown off…
If a big diamond mining company and a ‘big’ government get together and between them push innocent people off their land without consent, how can the government say this is preservation?... They are saying the Bush men are overhunting (a group of 100 people on a piece of land the size of Switzerland).. in response to this they have cut off their water supply and have been pushing them off the land and making them criminals to stasy or try and go back home...Over hunting?! Surely they could accuse themselves far more of the same thing and to their own human brothers and sisters.

What we can say with certainty is that the Bushmen are not happy to leave their ancestral lands and they are being moved out in an enforced way. The reserve is the size of switzerland so is plenty big enough for all parties concerned....They want to go home...call the numbers please

Before the event, scour the burning man website for theme camps and find one that describes what you are looking for. I found a schedule of live music at this camp at 3:00 and Amnesia. Saw Hamsa LIla there and some other great treats. Also, find the music schedule in the center camp...i saw The MErmen there after the burn and it was great.
Also, check out Otter Oasis village schedule (poke around the website before the event) that is a great place for those who wish to see live musicians at work. Sunday night I saw some amzing imrov funk and I was blown away.
Alma Melodiosa also did a few sets live that were really tasty.

I suggest you do some research before the event, there are folks setting up for a live music force. Also keep in check band names that play often. Hamsa Lila is a good one to start with. Ask around the playa. You wil find the zone. Seems like most of teh live music was between 7:00 and 3:00. A lot of untz untz over by 9:00. But who knows what 2006 will be like!!

I also stumbled into a couple Michael Franti sessions, but that was by luck. =)

I'm a 42 yr old woman looking for a new camp to call home. Last year I camped with the contact improv folks -I love to dance- and they were friendly and easy going but my good friend who I went with won't be going this year so I am open to the adventure of meeting new friends. I don't have a full Tribe profile yet but I'd be happy to tell you all about me.

I think it was moist pup what started it last year so kudos to you buddy

1.Never talk to strangers, they are evil

2. Participation sucks, that is what other people are for

3.Grey water is ful of essential vitimens and minerals, and can provide 48% of you FDA recommended intake of E-coli, very important

4. Porta poties make excellent bins, for your broken down bits of sofa, food waste, glass bottles, dead campmates and unwanted shade structures

5. the DPW love being gifted old sofas, broken bikes and defunct and failed shade structure, so just leave em in your camp space when you leave they wil realy appreciate,

6. Never offer a ride to anyone you talk to online or find by the side of the road especially if they are drunken irish nurses

7.people like gifting so much that you can go into their camp and help your self

8. Hiding peoples car keys is so funny everyone will apreciate it, especially the day before exodus, especially if you throw them in the porta pottie

9.Piss clear??? Piss daily i say, if its orange drink less, a daily brown piss smelling of mouldy pumpkin is ideal

10. Wrap all your gifts in 3 layers of wrap[ping parer everyone loves opening presents

11. People love being spanked without permission,

12 Ditto for taking pictures

13 Never put lights on your bike or yourself, its stoopid and spoils everyones fun, what use is haing an art car if you dont run over huma speed bumps

14 Any one with their breast on show loves having people make comments, better still have a feel they will thank you for it

15 hugs are gay

17 what happened to 16

16 there it is

18 Random mardi graw beads make fantastic gifts people wil share forever

19, Megaphones make you witty and more intelligent, everything you say through them will be much more valid if projected to everyone in a 100metre radius

20 especially atsound camps

21 especially at 7am

22 did i mention talking to strangers

23 the Police wil happil tell you where the bestdrugs can be found

24 Always pass your joint ot he cops its just plain rude not to

25 never take candy, beads, drugs, or hugs from strangers, its probably poison.

26 Always store your parafin for your fire performances in water bottles,

27 if you've never taken horse tranquiliser beofre and some strange man offers it to in a part of the city you dont recognise then clearly you must do it, especially if you've beendrinking heavily

28 Bacon is not welcome in black rock city, if you bring it you will be ostracised from the community

29 Art cars are way more fun to dive when loaded

30, especially when driven off the "streets" designated streets are for loosers, camps love it when you randomly drive through, your new found friends will all chcukle at what cad you are when you crash through their dome

31, always hugdeatyh guild, especially if yo are not wearing pants, they are such a friendly bunch,

32 always remind the DPW, how "WE" built this city when you arrive on saturday monring

33 grabge collection is on tuesday, friday and monday from outside your neighbours camp

34 If evrybody honks their horn during exodus we will all get out quicker,

35 why carry water is so heavy and never matches your outift, that what other people s camps are for they've got plenty

36 if your tripping and not having a fun time, go and make some friends, people love having people come by their camp and live out their harsh drug experiences in their private cam space, bonus points if you are reliving bad 'Nam expeeriences, previous sexual trauma or the police and everyonne you are se are following you

37, Buring man not as godd as it used to be then tell everone, particularly if you nowthink its shit and still come despite this

38 Virgins shouldn't be encoraged in any way, efuse to validate them, aknowledge them, help them or brake if you are driving your art car, as i said you should be laoded whislt doing this

39, If you are burnier than thou, thell he people in question, explain how yuo are better at it than the,, your costume is better, you've been going longer, larry once flicked his ash on you at thunderdome

40, if you need to have a discussion of a personal nature with you partner or are having difficulties in your relationship, then totally wait unitl you are craced out, aint slept for 4 days, way to hot, dehydrated, high on PCP and stuck int he middle of a hot dusty desert t resolve them

41 Fuck themes

42 No seriously fuck themes

43 Only queers dress up

44Anyone you ask where are you from and they say san fransisco, then say of course you are dear, as patronisingly as possible,

45 anyone who has flown from overseas is an alien i your country and is probably sbubersive, pread you patriot act and act upon it, use a satilite phone to report the to the toll free number 1800-patriot.

46 Camp stella the clean and sober camp all really want acid so spike their cool aid, they wil thank you for it.......when the sun stops melting

47 glitter is a costume,

48 Everybody likes feathers so more is more in my opinion

49 jesus drunknnurse seriously dude get a life how many have you thought of

50 i know i know, i'll finish up soon so we can get on to bitiching

51 Check the ntice board at centre cam for the Daily update on who we hate today board, if unable to check this then generally we will be bitching about ravers/ non artists/ artisits/ dogs/ people with kids onthe playa / The LLC/ BLM/

52 it is your job to ensure no bod sees anythin unsavoury on the playa, like gay people touching, rangers are equiped with pepper spay for this purpose

53 did i say hugs were for queers

54 Perfomaace art you dont get?? then tell the perfomrers they suck, everyone likes feed back right?

56 Recycle camp ove picking non cans out of their bags so liberally spinkle some little treats in there glass, mouldy food, used needles, those guyas realy appreciate the effort

57, By pass the ques at pankae shack by pushing thoruhg with a 20 dollar bill evryone will step aside because you are clearly an important individual

58 piis daily and piss everywhere, porta potties are just for people whith too much time on their hands

59 ciggerette butts are biogeradable and should be liberally depositied eveywhere

60, Everyone wil ike your music especially if you like gambain thrash gama or german techno,

61, ditto if its loud

62 no dude i mean seriously loud if centre camp dont complain then it aint loud enough

63 there is no such thing as bad techno

64 fuck boundires

65 your camp is always better than other peoples and feel free to tell them

65 If you get drunkand violent then buddy make it a double everyone loves bad vibes

66 if you believe youshould be on the stage then go for it, dont let "camp owners, the Rangers or other forms of facists supress you r radical self expression

67 Everyone loves shirt cockers

68 shirt cockers love being told to put some pants on, loudly

69 As i said megaphones are an ideal tool for epressing opinions uch as the one above

70 Make sure you get a new cup at each bar you visit

71, porta potties make excellent cup receptacles

72. never screw the lid on the bottle you pee in

73 especially if is somehwere other peopl ecan trip over

74 people cleaning the playa after wards, find picking up huiman turds a thoroughy rewarding use of their time

Going it alone this Burn?
Looking for a friendly group to share living with?

Divination Nation is a new, small theme camp for Burning Man 2006.
We're trying for an address around 3 o'clock on the Esplanade.
With two big art installations and around 40 people from Colorado, California and Washington DC, we're oriented towards a more family-unity atmosphere.

Children are welcome but this will be an adult camp for the most part.

We will have a central shade area with two kitchens (one for people with food allergies and one for the "I can eat anything" people), a big lounge and a bar. We're all about sharing what we bring, shouldering the load evenly and having a great time. We are very virgin friendly, 1/2 of the camp will be virgins this year!

No one is required to man the main art installation, Divination Station. The Colorado crew is taking care of that - however, if you'd like to help - no one will turn you away!

Let me know if you're interested in joining us, we always have room for more. This will be a quieter camp on the Esplanade, we won't have DJs or a big PA system. However, since we are shooting for the Esplanade - we will more than likely be surrounded by camps who are providing these noisier parts of BRC.

Sweet! I'm so freakin' excited, Xander and Steve are coming home from their travels in Africa.

I'm bounding off the walls in anticipation, it's hard to believe this time last year we didn't even know about each other's existance. The Axiom Gang was an odd conglomeration at Burning Man.

Consisting of myself, Xander, Steve, Shaffer, Missy and Dodo in camp and Phoenix, who was always with us in our wanderings.

Dodo and I had met last summer when I put word out needing people to help me with the RV. We had lunch a couple of times, met up and talked or called - but really didn't know each other hardly at all.

Xander and Steve have known each other since childhood, Xander and Shaffer worked together at the Summit County Rehab Center (is that right?) and Xander and Missy were co-workers as riverraft guides. I believe Shaffer, Steve and Missy knew each other through Xander. Phoenix and I have been clubfriends for about 10 years now, we met on playa quite by accident by the porta potties @ 7:30 & Hysteria (and scared the bejebus out of everyone around, screaming hysterically like little girls when we recognized each other. Heh- We were Hysterical on Hysteria - I just got that. LOL)

If you haven't taken a fully loaded RV with 6 passengers (we had an extra gal Zuzu on the ride to the burn and Shaffer followed in his car) across 2 mountain ranges - let me tell you, it's interesting and takes quite a while. From not knowing each other at all, to a cramped 26 hr ride - you get to know each other quickly. Then after we dropped off Zuzu at her camp, everyone else decided to stick to Synapse Village and camp with me. I was overwhelmed with honor and relief.

Even though I was a part of Synapse, I would've been camping alone expecting two people from another country, who either didn't speak English or spoke very little of it, to use the RV as a sleep and gear space. I was frightened out of my wits. I barely knew Anyone from Synapse, I had no idea what to expect in reality at the burn and I tend to be a hermit if left to my own devices.

With the gang camping with me, I was so relieved I had to have some time alone, as everyone was setting up their tents and the like, to cry. The openness, love and compassion of these 5 new people in my life, mixed with the overwhelmingness of being on the Playa for the first time - was too much for me to take standing up and dry. I wept for what felt like forever, thinking back to how far they had gotten in setting up before I came back out of the RV to help - it was more than likely only 15mins.

Camping on the playa with a brand new group of people was magickal for me. I love my playafamily strongly, without judgement on how their life is run off playa and with much admiration, respect and awe. No matter where they are on this planet, I feel a heart connection with them and miss them greatly while they are gone.

Maybe playa binds the heartstrings of friendship just a little bit more quickly, with those whom friendship would've happened anyway - given a chance. Maybe when your experiences of Burning Man are with brand new people, with no chance to have preconceived notions of how they "are or aren't" - friendship blooms on a very open and deep level. You may not know about each other's lifestyles or pet peeves and quirks, but you see the heart of someone in all their inner glory. All the everyday life bullshit gets swept away in the dust storms.

When I see them, I want to hug and kiss them in joy. No matter if I just saw them last week or 6 months ago. I can't believe I haven't seen Missy since the trip back from the burn, she's been working in Indonesia - I miss her a lot.
Xander and Steve are on their way home after their travels in Africa for so many months, I'm afraid I might smother them in love and joy at seeing their faces and beautiful smiles once again.

I am very proud of each and every one of my family.

No wonder they call me Mom. Heheheheh.

PS: In case some of you didn't know this, there were 4 Virgins in my camp; 5 if you count Phoenix. Myself, Steve, Missy, Shaffer, and Phoenix were all Virgins. (Though the veterans I had met over 2004-05 had taught me well and Xander nicknamed me The Stealth Virgin.)

I'd recommend camping with a bunch of Virgins, it's a hell of a lot of fun.

my name is drunkennurse from the london and euro burner communites way out here in rainy europe a little west of greenland

i will be DPWing playa side it for august andseptemember before makin my way to india via sidney but before all that i have to get my shit in gear for my project for the european regional we run called nowhere, in the mountains in spain

I want to establish a post office. I will be making post cards that the citizens of nowhere can send to their friends all over the world, buying the stamps, even borrowing a camel to deliver mail on site, designing my own theme post man uniforms, including candy raver mailman, silver mail man now all i needs is post to deliver!!

there will obviously be internal festival mail, but everyone loves getting post especially if its not the sucky money draining or junk sort, but many of our participants at nowhere will be first timer randoms with no burner friends......yet, so i want to ensure that everyone gets post!! specially from people from all over the world so i'm asking my tribe and burner friends if they wanna participate.

I need people to send a post card to my house here in london which i can take with me to spain in july and deliver onsite. the only problem is to fund my travels this year I have to become homless for a few months to save on rent so i'm couch surfing all through may and june so i need to get them sent to me soon before the end of april.

write a message to a random european or american at the regional on a post card, mail it to my address

citizen of nowhere c/o Michael Mchugh
mail me for my adress

And i'll deliver it on site.

write what ever you want on the card and i'll make sure that on one small cliff edge in spain amongst the mountains that a happy little burner gets a post card from your home town.

so if you feel like helpin we should have around 100 participants this year so if you feel like asking a few of your friends to do the same then we can have post for everyone a couple of days.

don't forget we will have french, german dutch, spainish, italian, flemish, and irish speakers there too so if you or someone you know can speak any of these languages then they should clearlly send a card too. feel free to forward to any one else you think may be interested in helping

many thanks forn your help guys. i really wanna make this project work. if any of you know anyone personally going to nowhere then send them a personaly post card too. and if youhave any friends in europe around the 6th to the 9th then clealry they should come to play at nowhere.

remeber it takes 7-10 days foir mail to get to london and i move in a few weeks

I got to the man burn and was choking from all the fumes from the traffic jam of art cars on top of the fumes from the kerosene the fire dancers used. I was really light headed. As soon as the man fell over I made a bee lne out of there, went back to my camp for a snooze, then got up and went to center camp to catch a 2AM set by the Mermen. I skipped the temple burn all together I ad been invited to a spaghetti dinner at a camp on the other side of the playa and I was completely stuffed. I was driving back to SF the next morning at the ass crack of dawn, so I just went back to my camp and hit the sack.

Hope and Fear

www.burningman.com/art_of_b...heme.html

We take comfort in the notion that we have a past to guide us, but we reinterpret history every day according to what happens in the present. The future, too, is a projection of our hopes and fears in what is called the here and now. But even what we term the here and now is largely an imaginary place and time. If we say that now exists exactly now, we already speak of the past. We are caught in a temporal slipstream, a state of perpetual flux. The present really narrows down into the thinnest slice of time. It is no wider than the span of a reflexive arc, that moment when the heart says to the mind: so shall it be. This year's art theme will allow us to explore how we create futurity. Express what you most hope for in the future! Express what you most fear! The Burning Man, as heartbeat of our city, will be made to rise and fall upon this tidal flow of our emotions and imagination.

The centerpiece of Hope and Fear will be a sleek Art Deco palace, the Pavilion of the Future. Art Deco, arising in the 1920's and 30's, became a symbol throughout much of 20th Century for all that was considered modern. Its streamlined and dynamic forms derived from an industrial aesthetic that romanticized progress. They summoned up a sense of power, purpose and velocity. As an art style, Deco stands as the West's last commonly held vision of a utopian future. Today, of course, this art form represents a retro-future: one that never came to be. The principle problems of post-modern life do not concern how we'll employ our endless leisure. Robots do not wait upon us hand and foot, nor do we jet from place to place in private rocket ships. Along the road to a utopia, these science fiction fantasies gave way to traffic jams. The future, it begins to seem, ran out of gas.

Within the Pavilion of the Future, participants will encounter a bewildering array of rooms arranged to form a maze. Each of these rooms will house art installations that are either utopic or dystopic. Utopias are visions of our highest hopes. They paint a picture of a better world. Dystopias are cautionary tales and correspond to fear of what the future has in store. Artists will also be invited to install various kinds of voting devices in the vestibule of the Pavilion. Some of these devices will depend on chance, like slot machines. Others will allow participants to directly express what they immediately feel. All will offer up a stark and simple choice: Will you vote for hope, or will you vote for fear? Further opportunities will be provided by elegant teeter-totters located in the circle that surrounds the Pavilion (a teeter signals green for hope; a totter signals red for fear). Voting booths will also be stationed at locations throughout Black Rock City.

All of these devices will be connected by a closed Wifi network, and linked to a secure computer equipped with a sophisticated software program. This futuristic technology will employ a complex algorithm to determine the statistical mean of our participating community's hopes and fears at any given moment. As a result of these measurements, the Burning Man will either ascend while slowly raising its arms, as if to welcome all our hopes, or descend into a cage of fear located atop the Pavilion's elevated deck. This latter movement will allow participants who win their way up to the deck to witness Burning Man close up through a chrome metal lattice constructed from the gleaming remnants of discarded auto parts. Will the Man remain mired in fear, or will he rise and stretch his arms against the sky? Amid urgent currents of hope and surging riptides of fear, the result is sure to be unpredictable. As with the rotating of the Man of 2005, this daily drama will occur only during evening hours.

Each of us is an emitter of the future, and hope and fear are both legitimate responses to the great unknown. Confronting fear, instead of fleeing it, requires courage and cool reason. This experience can lead to struggle and to change. Expressing what we hope for can inspire faith that opens up a path where none appeared before. In 2006, as the 21st Century rushes forward, the time has come to ask ourselves: Are we merely along for the ride? We encourage all participants to contribute to some aspect of this year's art theme. Create a theme camp that forecasts the future. Imagine alternative pasts which, branching off from what we know, create alternative realities. Immediately confront your own future or the world's future. Plunge into the time stream (and learn how to swim). If you are doing fire art or planning to install a work of art upon the open playa (whether it's related to our theme or not), please see our Art Guidelines for more information. Any art by anyone is always welcome.

For the last three months, the better part of my life has been spent developing, integrating, designing and tweaking a new website for the burner community. Finally, I am ready to publicly announce it.

It is a place where you can connect.

Share.

Participate.

Where there are no spectators.

Wouldn't be great if there was an easy to remember domain name? One that spoke to the community? A mantra that really made it all seem to click?

Something like: http://NoSpectators.com ?

NoSpectators.com is all about connecting, sharing and participating. In short, it is about not being a spectator. My hope is that it will become the central meeting place for people to gather, interact, discuss issues and participate in the greater burner community.

Virtually everything is interactive. Take a poll, or comment on a news story. Post an event, or start a vibrant discussion in the forums. Start your own journal/blog, or jump into the chatroom to chill. Post a link to your favorite burner website, or add your photos to the gallery. There will also be static content as well. It will offer tangible benefits that I think are needed in one centralized location.

There are no membership fees or ads (I'm paying for all of this, software, domain name, forum, webserver, etc., out of my own pocket). Unless you guys drain me of personal resources that need to be used for rent or food, the site will remain ad-free indefinitely. The site will not be censored. Topics that might be too controversial or politically subversive for the front page of other sites will find their home here. Commentary is directly related to the articles on the main site, so you can make your voice heard. The site can be searched, so you can find items that are of particular interest to you. The forum is the best software I could find. It offers numerous options and configurations. Popular posts can be kept visible and sorted for easy location. Posts can be rated by participants, and you can be notified when there are responses to threads that you subscribe to. And anyone can participate by submitting articles, posts, journals, photos, links and events.

And when I say anyone, I mean anyone. Your opinions don't have to concur with mine. Hell, I've even set up a section of the forum where radicals, trolls and flamers can feel at home. One of the sections of NoSpectators.com will be about politics and this will allow anyone to have a soapbox, whether I agree with your ideologies or not. There will be other sections that cover news, events, etc. My hope is that everyone contributes to the community, and this site will hopefully facilitate that.

You may ask why I am putting so much blood, sweat and tears into this. Well, this is my way of participating, my way of giving back to the community. Given my lack of mechanical skills, organizational leadership or artistic ability, it is unlikely that I'll ever build an art vehicle, run a theme camp or create Art on the playa. So, this is my humble way of gifting the other fifty-one weeks of the year.

Which brings up the question of your participation. How much do you want to be involved? Write an article now and then, or a regular column? Post in the forum? Or just use this as another outlet for your thoughts, your inspirations? Please let me know if you are interested in any or all of the above.

If you know anyone that would like to get involved, please share the site with your burner friends, family and loved ones. Everyone is invited, except for spectators of course! :)

I have to say I am really excited about this. I realize that NoSpectators.com may fail and no one will utilize the site. But something inside of me says that it could become something of real value to the burner community as a whole.

Burn brightly!

I totally got it. From the minute I arrived I knew I was in the right place for me. Within a day I was part of the community working at the Media Mecca for a bit, working extensively at BMIR, helping set up installations on the playa and providing internet access for New Orleans burners trying to contact home.

I was there for nine days. Next year I’ll be there even earlier (am planning on 13 days) to help with the set up of BMIR. I'll also be going to BMIR planning meetings year round.

I also did other things like give a total stranger (and now good friend a ride back to San Francisco). How did you contribute to the community? “ It doesn’t have to be “big” it could be something like saying we fed three people who wandered into our camp, or I helped someone fix their bicycle.

I can't believe it's just october and i'm already feeling pangs of homesickness. I didn't even have such a great time at Burning Man, becuase of so many personal issues swirling around camp, and stress between me and my primary lover (no, not because either of us were jelous about playing with other people!).

Still... I want playa in my hair. I want to get up every day and wear whatever I want, from shimmery goodness to total nothingness, without being cat-called, arrested, or commited to a mental institution. I want to wear nothing but funky tights and chunky boots. I want to play with fire, be near it, feel its heat washing over me against a chill night. I want to be completely surrounded by works of art, from people to paintings to sculptures to installations. I want to hug a random person just because they're smiling and wearing a big, fuzzy something-or-other. Or just because they're smiling. Or just because hugs feel good, and I know they won't be freaked out from a stranger offering such an intimate moment up for free. I want to ride my bike out across open land, fun fur blowing in the wind. I want to be able to obtain food without handing over paper money. I want to do nice things for people without having to explain to them that I don't expect anything in return, but I hope they'll do the same for others.

...sigh... homesick...

and the Portland decomp was cancelled without any definite rescheduling. I need hugs! I need kisses! I need nudity! NOW, dammit!

I gave people glowy things when they were hard to see at night, I shared food ( made waffles!), helped in the B.E.D. workshops, and gave a few things I had to people who needed them. (tent stakes, tp, wipes, etc. ) I tried to offer assistance as much as I could. One evening I went to Cyborg & Samurai to dance and have a drink. Their cute bartender was bummed because she was nearly out of alcohol, but was able to make a vodka cranberry for me which was actually perfect! The next day I brought her a bottle of liquor. Oh, I also brought a bunch of costumey / lingerie goodies to the Black Rock Boutique.

Next year I will create some other kind of fun playa gift. This was my learning year. :)

I had an amazing expereince the whole time I was at burning man, but this being my first year, I'd do a few things differently.

1. Goggles: Yeah I had 'em, but they were tinted. Dust storms are just as out there at night. Get clear goggles.

2. Duct tape a sign to your camper/van/tent/whatever if you're expecting poeple to meet you. This is especially useful if you've got people coming in throughout the week. Your freinds are likely not going to find you.

3. Realize that when someone says 2 weeks before the event that they're camping at 4:30 and ego that the likelyhood of them getting right there on the corner is small (unless they're a themed camp). They're giving you a general idea of where they're going to try to camp. be ready to search around several blocks to find them.

4. Don't let your other newbie friends tell you "oh yeah, we'll be easy to find... Look for the big dome and scaffolding". You can't hack up playa dust without hitting a dome or scaffolding. They're everywhere. (or suspect your friends don't really want you to find them.. ;)

5. If you take an RV, make sure you understand how the toilet system works. Next time I'll just use the PortaPottys, as they really weren't that bad. Clogged RV systems are a bitch to clear.

6. Ignore your SO when she says you're bringing too much water. Give out excess water during Critical Tits. It was Hugely appriciated.

7. Go check out the really cool art installations out on the playa early in the week. Windmills burned before I got to see them. Mouse Traps broke before I got to see them.

8. Probably the biggest for me: YES, EVERYONE REALLY DOES DRESS UP OR GO NAKED. It's not just a few pictures you've seen of some special people or a one time coustume party that goes on during the event. I felt pretty lame with only jeans and tee shirts. Thankfully freinds and stangers helped out too. :) Go get some whacky outfits. Add to the specticle.

Anyone have things of their own?

For me, I'd have to say getting a sno-cone from the giant blue train was my favorite. I'd spent all day in deep playa and was walking back to camp with very little water. It was a pretty hot afternoon and I'd come across this group's art car.

When they handed me a sno-cone, I couldn't have been happier, I was damn near in tears.

Heading to Burning Man I was finally becoming infected with a small dose of the excitement my girl Allie seemed to be terminal with for the last two weeks. Her drive for this thing, in it's planning, preparation and execution had become bordering on unhealthy but I love her so I rode with it just to make sure she didnt start twitching. We rolled up at 2am to a surly leprechaun who yelled and searched our truck for proof of lies we were obviously propagating on him til he found the kitchen sink we'd smuggled across state lines and it was as if that was the magic key to his cranky heart.
The next day after reviewing our entrance and ensuing 40 degree bike ride to the Man and several friendly but bedraggled revelers, followed by a round of frozen blind tent raising olympics and sleep sans body heat to a finish line of no morning coffee left me pondering just what the fuck I'd signed on for. The bottom seemed to be the ugly bitch on the corner that day screaming for the asshole in the levis to take them off...NOW.
Charming.
Somehow Screechy the Playa Fashion Cop jarred something loose in me. My typical skill set, especially in new environments is to hang back - to be a JAFO (Just A Fucking Observer) til I have mastery of my terrain. But looking around at the teeming masses of seeming normal circus freaks surrounding me on all sides as I rode my purple furred mountain bike gave me an epiphany; There would be no saving my ass and my face at the same time here. My dignity had no chance, my only choice was to abandon myself to an utter lack of impulse control and PLAY.
Unfettered silliness isnt my strong suite but something in that ever present playa dust had a magical, medicinal quality that implored me to embrace life. To be utterly in the moment, to enjoy every person I came in contact with and to love that slightly obsessed girl at my side with wreckless abandon.
The next several days were a whirl of laughing from my belly, lots of exercise, (I love bikes now) creative inspirations, crying as if no one watched, stupendously honest conversations, grinding lust, rediculous attire, playa head, improbable connections, amazing food, cammeraderie, great music and a growing surity that my
10 month Tribe romance was in fact actually one of the few truly great loves of my lifetime. The playa made us insatiable, not just in a carnal asada sort of way but simply to drink each other in however it felt right at the time and feel compelled to share the ambrosia with all else around us. The playa opened my eyes to just how lucky a man I am to be who I've become 40 years later and to really embrace that as well as all the human landscape it encompasses; my home, job, friends, recovery, environment, family - and especially that girl who dragged me out into the desert.
Princess Sally Hiss Ass is what the playa named her, and while the Man has burned, Black Rock City has been leveled and the rythmic neon glow stick passions have slipped through that telephone booth exit gate to their Clark Kent lives I'm very sure the playa dust I continue to find everywhere isnt why I love that girl so much, only a blissed out reminder that I do.

Sitting in traffic, rushing to get to work on time, it feels really stifling today. I'm dressed like everyone else, I go to work like a mindless automaton. The most creative thing I've done since I got back was add some spices to my tuna noodle casserole that weren't in the recipe.

Everyone here is so boring and mundane. Who cares about a printing deadline or getting home to mow your lawn??? I want to see a giant foot drive by or a man walking in a snorkeling outfit, complete with flippers, down the dusty street. I want to feel alive again..............

the best way i have to describe my experience is INTENSE, in the extremely good sense, and the extremely bad sense.

my first three or four days on the playa were stressful, painful, emotionally trying, and (the biggest surprise for me) alienating. i felt like more a part of the BM community before i arrived than after, for the first few days.

my campmates were fighting with each other, which put enormous emotional strain on me. i empathize too much (piscean) when conflict is around, especially when there's yelling, which makes me recede in self-defense. the hurricane hit, which we heard about from a gentelman by a burn barrel near center camp, and my boyfriend's family lived in new orleans. this put enormous strain on our relationship as he struggled to cope with the tragedy ravaging his hometown. i was afraid that it might be the end of the best relationship i've ever been in.

i went to BM with a group of people i love, to share in their experiences and have them help me introduce myself to this wonderful world. instead, i wound up completely on my own with emotional burdens from strained relationships heaped upon me. i spent a few days riding around the playa alone, just soaking in the artwork.

eventually, after a *very* bad trip that my boyfriend managed to help me turn into a good one, i came out of that experience with new eyes. that trip in itself mirrors my BM experience. afterwards, i was able to see the beauty and feel myself connected as part of the whole. intensity is transforming, and it certainly changed me.

by burn night, i was mesmerized by the wonder and beauty of all the people around me. the beauty of their hearts and minds, not of the clothes they decked themselves out in (or didn't). i didn't understand what it meant to burn the man until i experienced it, and now i can't wait to get back there again for more.

this burn was a tremendous struggle for me, but certainly one that has changed me in a positive way. i'm not sure if i'm stronger for it (which is what everyone says about this experience of mine), but i certainly have a new perspective on human relationships, community, and life.

thank you, fellow burners, for being my catalyst.

I am in the process of packing / planning for my first Burn. I am so psyched!!! Since we will be flying in to San Fran, we will be buying a lot of things that could not be easilly taken on a plane (deep-cycle batteries for camp power, large coolers, etc). Has anyone else dealt with this? Is there a Salvation Army or Goodwill location in Reno or Gerlach? Should I give the stuff to them? Are there donation posts to give the stuff to other burners? Should I be selfish and have the stuff shipped home? Will I ever shut up so someone can answer my question?

Saturday nigh, the night that the Man burns. Before all the excitement revs up, here are some things to think about.

1. Leave your bike at camp. I know it seems that the man is a long way but really consider walking. It's very difficult to both find a safe place to put your bike once you reach the man and FIND your bike once the man falls. Keep in mind that a cluster of bikes lying on the open playa is a HUGE tripping hazard and makes things very dificult for art cars to navigate.

2. Food and Water. Don't forget to bring some water. You may be out at the man for a while so bring water and something to snack on. jsome cheese crackers or mabe a nutrition bar.

4. Sit Down!!! If you find that you're within the first 5 or 6 rows of people, please sit down. Let the people behind you have a chance to see everything. Also, it helps the fabulous Rangers who are trying to maintain a safety perimiter by keeping "runners" from getting a running start. If you can, encourage people around you to sit down too.

5. Lock it up. This isn't a huge problem but something to consider. Look around your camp before heading out to the man. Put any vauables in a safe place (locked in your car, hidden in a sock in your suitcase, ect). Theft is very rare on burn night but it can happen. Do know though, there are a number of Rangers who will be sacrificing their ability to watch the Man burn to walk around Black Rock City and keep an eye on things for ya.

6. Don't get toooo f*cked up. It might seem "soo frigg'n cool to be on (insert inebriant of choice) when the man burns!!!" but take it easy. Burn night is gonna be full of emotional energy and chaos plus, you've just spent a week out in harsh conditions. Try not to over do it.

7. Have a group plan. If you're going out to watch the Man burn in a group, have a loose plan for the aftermath. Once the man falls, it's gonna be hectic and chaotic. It's possible that your group may get separated. Have a loose plan. Something like "If we get separated, lets meet at (insert cool ass camp on the esplinade) afterwards". Try to not make your plan too ridged. For instance "If we don't see you at (meeting spot) by 12 midnight, we'll assume you found something cooler to do. See ya back at camp eventually." or some such.

If you end up missing someone, try not to obsess over it too much. They may have just hooked up with a hottie and are having a grand time. If a wayward friend doesn't surface by sunday, then you might want to check with the REMSA medical tent behind the Center Cafe or with the Rangers right next door to REMSA.

Have a great burn everyone.

#2: Don't over-pack. There's a natural human tendancy to want to bring everything, INCLUDING the Kitchen Sink, if your thinking of packing something because you JUST MIGHT use it, don't, odds are you'll never touch it.

#3: Once you drive north from Interstate 80, on the 2 lane road north to Gerlach, ALWAYS obey the speed limits through the small towns of Wadsworth, Nixon/Pyramid Lake, Empire and Gerlach. The Local constabulary LOVE to pay for the policemans ball by giving Burners speeding tickets this of year.

#4: Don't forget your ticket!

#5: Your Cell phone will stop working about 5-10 miles after you turn off Interstate 80.

#6: Also, when you turn off 80, there be only one further opportunity for gas and soundries, at the Empire Store about 15 miles before you get to the playa, keep in mind you'll be paying a higher price for stuff at the Empire Store.

#7: And Finally, Once you get there, Chill, relax, soak it in, live in the moment, and let it go. If something happens you didn't expect, fuck it, go with the flow and enjoy.

#8: And... Don't forget your ticket!
